The National Ballet School of Cuba is one of the finest centres for classical ballet training in the world.

Project History

The school dates back to the Ballet School of the Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical de La Habana, founded in 1931, where the prima ballerina Alicia Alonso and her former husband Fernando Alonso and his brother Alberto received their earliest ballet classes. Following the revolution in 1959 and the establishment of state-sponsored education, the National Ballet School was created in 1961 as part of the National School of Art. The School, together with its influential progressive teaching methods, is known as one of the finest centers for classical ballet training in the world. Many of the school’s alumni are eminent professionals, performing both in Cuba and internationally; the most notable dancer in the UK at present being Carlos Acosta, Principal Guest Artist at the Royal Ballet.

Project & ACE

ACE over the last few years, through its very successful Cuba cultural tour, has built up a close and warm relationship with School, which includes meeting with the Director and staff, and observing the students practice and perform at different levels in the dance studios. It is one of the main highlights of the Cuba tour. Through an annual grant ACE is delighted to support the education at the school.
